Gypsum is an evaporite mineral most commonly found in layered sedimentary deposits in association with halite, anhydrite, sulfur, calcite, and dolomite.
Gypsum provides fire protection. Gypsum per se, made of CaSO4 and crystal water, is a non-combustible substance.
Gypsum use:
1. Gypsum board is used as interior wall surface because of ease of installation. It is porous, soft and lightweight, and can be cut by a utility knife and nailed to a structure.
2. Gypsum is widely used to manufacture wallboards that are used to cover walls and ceilings. It's also used to make plaster which is used in the construction of homes as well as mixed into a patching compound for wallboard repair.
